Exports from Sri Lanka

Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, Pakistan ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for leather exports from Sri Lanka, comprising 14% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Turkey ($X), with a 6.3% share of total exports. It was followed by India, with a 2.1% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value to Pakistan amounted to +16.7%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Turkey (+7.3% per year) and India (-34.3% per year).

In 2021, the average leather export price amounted to $X per ton, falling by -2.7% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, continues to indicate a slight increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the average export price increased by 49%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Turkey ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Malaysia (+10.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Sri Lanka

In 2021, India (X tons) constituted the largest leather supplier to Sri Lanka, accounting for a 41% share of total imports. Moreover, leather imports from India exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Pakistan (X tons), fourfold. The third position in this ranking was held by Turkey (X tons), with an 8.1% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from India was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Pakistan (-4.2% per year) and Turkey (+5.3% per year).
In value terms, Turkey ($X), India ($X) and Pakistan ($X) appeared to be the largest leather suppliers to Sri Lanka, together comprising 62% of total imports. These countries were followed by Japan, the United States, Brazil, Italy and the Netherlands, which together accounted for a further 23%.
Among the main suppliers, Japan, with a CAGR of +13.4%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.
