Exports from Sri Lanka

In 2022, overseas shipments of lifting, handling, loading or unloading machinery decreased by 0% to X units, falling for the third consecutive year after four years of growth. In general, exports posted a significant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 680% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X units in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, loading machinery exports shrank to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports recorded significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 434% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Australia (X units) was the main destination for loading machinery exports from Sri Lanka, with a approx. 100% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Australia was relatively modest.

In value terms, Australia ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for lifting, handling, loading or unloading machinery exports from Sri Lanka, comprising 97% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Maldives ($X), with less than 0.1% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Australia stood at +54.7%.

In 2022, the average loading machinery export price amounted to $X per unit, waning by -14% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 an increase of 69%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per unit. From 2016 to 2022, the average export prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied noticeably for the major overseas markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Maldives ($X per unit), while the average price for exports to Australia stood at $X per unit.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Ethiopia (+121.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

Imports into Sri Lanka

In 2022, purchases abroad of lifting, handling, loading or unloading machinery decreased by -22.8% to X units, falling for the third year in a row after three years of growth. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed perceptible growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 196% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X units in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, loading machinery imports reduced to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 191%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Denmark (X units), China (X units) and Germany (X units) were the main suppliers of loading machinery imports to Sri Lanka, with a combined 79% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Denmark (with a CAGR of +41.0%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Denmark ($X), China ($X) and Germany ($X) were the largest loading machinery suppliers to Sri Lanka, together accounting for 80% of total imports. These countries were followed by Poland, Singapore, India, Japan and Italy, which together accounted for a further 14%.

Among the main suppliers, Singapore, with a CAGR of +25.4%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average loading machinery import price amounted to $X per unit, jumping by 21% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, recorded a mild descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the average import price increased by 68% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per unit in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per unit), while the price for Japan ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Japan (+1.3%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
