The Sri Lankan filling containers machinery market skyrocketed to $X in 2021, picking up by 75% against the previous year. This figure reflects the total revenues of producers and importers (excluding logistics costs, retail marketing costs, and retailers' margins, which will be included in the final consumer price). In general, consumption saw a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the market attained the maximum level at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, after three years of decline, there was significant growth in overseas shipments of machinery for filling, closing, sealing, capsuling or labelling containers, when their volume increased by 56% to X units. Over the period under review, exports saw strong growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 178%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X units. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, filling containers machinery exports rose sharply to $X in 2021. Overall, exports enjoyed a strong expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 108%. The exports peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

France (X units), India (X units) and Denmark (X units) were the main destinations of filling containers machinery exports from Sri Lanka, with a combined 61% share of total exports. Indonesia, the United States, Bangladesh, Nepal, Malaysia, Mexico, Singapore and the United Arab Emirates lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 29%.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Indonesia (with a CAGR of +60.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for filling containers machinery exported from Sri Lanka were Denmark ($X), France ($X) and India ($X), together comprising 70% of total exports. These countries were followed by Indonesia, the United States, Bangladesh, Nepal, Mexico, Singapore, Malaysia and the United Arab Emirates, which together accounted for a further 19%.

Among the main countries of destination, Indonesia, with a CAGR of +196.4%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the average filling containers machinery export price amounted to $X per unit, which is down by -28.1% against the previous year. In general, export price indicated a resilient increase from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +5.3% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when the average export price increased by 46% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per unit in 2020, and then contracted rapidly in the following year.

Imports into Sri Lanka

In 2021, imports of machinery for filling, closing, sealing, capsuling or labelling containers into Sri Lanka surged to X units, growing by 88% against 2020. Overall, imports continue to indicate a perceptible expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when imports increased by 390%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X units in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, filling containers machinery imports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a pronounced setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when imports increased by 179% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, China (X units) constituted the largest filling containers machinery supplier to Sri Lanka, accounting for a 69% share of total imports. Moreover, filling containers machinery imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, India (X units), fivefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Germany (X units), with an 11% share.

In 2021, the average filling containers machinery import price amounted to $X per unit, declining by -21.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price continues to indicate a perceptible reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the average import price increased by 171%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per unit. From 2019 to 2021, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per unit), while the price for China ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
