The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 370% against the previous year. The exports peaked in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Maldives (X kg) was the main destination for manganites, manganates, molybdates and tungstates exports from Sri Lanka, with a approx. 100% share of total exports.

Over the period under review, imports, however, posted a remarkable increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 312%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, manganites, manganates, molybdates and tungstates imports fell modestly to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, saw buoyant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 204%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

China (X tons), the United States (X tons) and India (X tons) were the main suppliers of manganites, manganates, molybdates and tungstates imports to Sri Lanka, together accounting for 75% of total imports. Singapore and Belgium lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 13%.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Belgium (with a CAGR of +74.1%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of manganites, manganates and permanganates, molybdates and tungstates to Sri Lanka, comprising 46% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the United States ($X), with a 12% share of total imports. It was followed by India, with an 11% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from China amounted to +10.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the United States (+19.0% per year) and India (+23.3% per year).

Overall, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the average import price increased by 24%. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Belgium ($X per ton), while the price for the United States ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (+3.8%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
