The Sri Lankan marble and travertine market shrank dramatically to $X in 2021, waning by -80.6% against the previous year. Exports from Sri Lanka
In 2021, the amount of marble and travertine exported from Sri Lanka dropped significantly to X tons, waning by -44.2% compared with the year before. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a strong expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when exports increased by 2,388% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, marble and travertine exports fell markedly to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, posted strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 1,920%. The exports peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
The UK (X tons) was the main destination for marble and travertine exports from Sri Lanka, with a 86% share of total exports. Moreover, marble and travertine exports to the UK exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Maldives (X tons), sevenfold.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to the UK was relatively modest. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Maldives (+44.4% per year) and India (-26.7% per year).
In value terms, the UK ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for marble and travertine exports from Sri Lanka, comprising 82% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Maldives ($X), with a 13% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to the UK was relatively modest. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Maldives (+24.9% per year) and India (-18.0% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The average marble and travertine export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 7.6% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a perceptible descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 56% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was India ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to the UK ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to India (+11.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Imports into Sri Lanka
Marble and travertine imports into Sri Lanka reduced markedly to X tons in 2021, declining by -80.5% on the year before. Overall, imports showed a deep contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 111% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, marble and travertine imports fell markedly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports saw a sharp decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 75%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
Oman (X tons), Turkey (X tons) and India (X tons) were the main suppliers of marble and travertine imports to Sri Lanka, with a combined 90% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Oman (with a CAGR of +72.6%), while imports for the other leaders experienced a decline.
In value terms, Turkey ($X), Oman ($X) and India ($X) appeared to be the largest marble and travertine suppliers to Sri Lanka, with a combined 85% share of total imports.
In terms of the main suppliers, Oman, with a CAGR of +63.8%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced a decline.
Import Prices by Country
The average marble and travertine import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, therefore, remained relatively stable against the previous year. In general, the import price continues to indicate a abrupt downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 an increase of 15%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2018 to 2021, the average import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while the price for Oman ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
