Mate Market Size in Sri Lanka

In 2022, the Sri Lankan mate market was finally on the rise to reach $X for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. In general, consumption, however, faced a deep setback. Mate consumption peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2021, and then shrank rapidly in the following year.

In value terms, mate exports reduced to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, enjoyed temperate growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when exports increased by 1,179%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Chile (X tons) was the main destination for mate exports from Sri Lanka, accounting for a 53% share of total exports. Moreover, mate exports to Chile exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Poland (X kg), threefold. The third position in this ranking was held by Bahrain (X kg), with a 12% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Chile totaled -6.0%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Poland (0.0% per year) and Bahrain (+65.7% per year).

In value terms, Poland ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for mate exports from Sri Lanka, comprising 39% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Chile ($X), with a 13% share of total exports. It was followed by Bahrain, with an 11% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Poland was relatively modest. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Chile (+26.4% per year) and Bahrain (+27.1% per year).

The average mate export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, surging by 13% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, continues to indicate a abrupt descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the average export price increased by 162% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Chile ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Chile (+34.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

In 2022, approx. X kg of mate were imported into Sri Lanka; waning by -99.9% on 2021. Overall, imports continue to indicate a precipitous descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 478%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
