In 2022, the Sri Lankan melon seed market decreased by -88.2% to $X for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. The average melon seed export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, falling by -4.8% against the previous year. In general, the export price recorded a mild decline. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas purchases of melon seed, when their volume decreased by -86.6% to X kg. Over the period under review, imports faced a dramatic curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 1,747%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, melon seed imports dropped dramatically to $X in 2022. Overall, imports showed a precipitous descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when imports increased by 1,817%. Imports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, China (X kg) constituted the largest melon seed supplier to Sri Lanka, with a 83% share of total imports. Moreover, melon seed imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, India (X kg), sixfold.
