Overall, exports continue to indicate a precipitous shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 356%. The exports peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, graphite non-electrical articles exports dropped dramatically to $X in 2022. In general, exports faced a deep slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 585% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X, and then declined sharply in the following year.

New Zealand (X tons), Spain (X tons) and Australia (X kg) were the main destinations of graphite non-electrical articles exports from Sri Lanka, together comprising 96% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Spain (with a CAGR of +28.5%), while the other leaders experienced a decline.

In value terms, Spain ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for non-electrical articles of graphite or other carbon exports from Sri Lanka, comprising 74% of total exports. Imports into Sri Lanka

In 2022, supplies from abroad of non-electrical articles of graphite or other carbon increased by 43% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. In general, imports, however, showed a mild reduction. Imports peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, graphite non-electrical articles imports surged to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a perceptible descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 58% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

The United States (X tons), South Korea (X tons) and China (X tons) were the main suppliers of graphite non-electrical articles imports to Sri Lanka, with a combined 63% share of total imports. Japan, the United Arab Emirates, the UK and Spain lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 31%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by the United Arab Emirates (with a CAGR of +116.3%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the United States ($X) constituted the largest supplier of non-electrical articles of graphite or other carbon to Sri Lanka, comprising 45% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Japan ($X), with a 15% share of total imports. It was followed by the United Arab Emirates, with a 10% share.
