Exports from Sri Lanka
In 2022, the amount of nonwoven fabrics exported from Sri Lanka fell rapidly to X tons, reducing by -34% compared with the previous year's figure. In general, exports, however, showed a significant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when exports increased by 479%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2021, and then contracted markedly in the following year.
In value terms, nonwoven fabric exports dropped rapidly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded strong growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 246% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2021, and then dropped significantly in the following year.
Exports by Country
Singapore (X tons) was the main destination for nonwoven fabric exports from Sri Lanka, with a 38% share of total exports. Moreover, nonwoven fabric exports to Singapore exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, India (X tons), twofold. Germany (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 7.3% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Singapore totaled +58.3%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: India (+39.0% per year) and Germany (+71.8% per year).
In value terms, Singapore ($X), India ($X) and Bangladesh ($X) constituted the largest markets for nonwoven fabric exported from Sri Lanka worldwide, together accounting for 46% of total exports. Germany, New Zealand, the Netherlands, Belgium, Latvia, South Korea, the UK, Chile and Russia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 34%.
Among the main countries of destination, Belgium, with a CAGR of +88.2%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the average nonwoven fabric export price amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 21% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a abrupt curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 25%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2018 to 2022, the average export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Bangladesh ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Chile ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to New Zealand (+10.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Sri Lanka
In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in purchases abroad of nonwoven fabrics, when their volume decreased by -30.1% to X tons. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate temperate growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 86% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2021, and then plummeted in the following year.
In value terms, nonwoven fabric imports declined notably to $X in 2022. Overall, imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 49%. Imports peaked at $X in 2021, and then declined significantly in the following year.
Imports by Country
In 2022, China (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of nonwoven fabric to Sri Lanka, accounting for a 78% share of total imports. Moreover, nonwoven fabric imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, India (X tons), sevenfold. Hong Kong SAR (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 2.5% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from China totaled +7.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: India (+13.9% per year) and Hong Kong SAR (-13.7% per year).
In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of nonwoven fabrics to Sri Lanka, comprising 69% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by India ($X), with an 8.6% share of total imports. It was followed by Taiwan (Chinese), with a 5.3% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from China amounted to +4.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: India (+7.0% per year) and Taiwan (Chinese) (+8.4% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The average nonwoven fabric import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, dropping by -15.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price recorded a pronounced slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when the average import price increased by 13%. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Taiwan (Chinese) ($X per ton), while the price for Thailand ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
