Overall, exports, however, showed a pronounced reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 1,586%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, phenolic resins exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, saw a deep slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 1,964%. The exports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Bangladesh (X tons), Vietnam (X kg) and India (X kg) were the main destinations of phenolic resins exports from Sri Lanka.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Bangladesh (with a CAGR of -9.1%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline.

In value terms, Bangladesh ($X), India ($X) and Vietnam ($X) were the largest markets for phenolic resins exported from Sri Lanka worldwide.

The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the average export price increased by 156%. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was India ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Vietnam ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Indonesia (+29.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

Imports into Sri Lanka

In 2021, the amount of phenolic resins in primary forms imported into Sri Lanka skyrocketed to X tons, with an increase of 51% against the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a resilient expansion. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, phenolic resins imports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, total imports indicated a buoyant increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +8.6% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +77.2% against 2018 indices. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

India (X tons), Belgium (X tons) and South Africa (X tons) were the main suppliers of phenolic resins imports to Sri Lanka, with a combined 38% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for South Africa (with a CAGR of +37.5%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, India ($X), Belgium ($X) and China ($X) appeared to be the largest phenolic resins suppliers to Sri Lanka, with a combined 39% share of total imports. These countries were followed by South Africa, Germany, the Netherlands, Italy, the United States, Malaysia, Indonesia and France, which together accounted for a further 27%.
