For the third year in a row, the Sri Lankan photographic film market recorded growth in sales value, which increased by 23% to $X in 2021. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of the market failed to regain momentum.

Photographic film exports from Sri Lanka soared to X square meters in 2021, increasing by 141% compared with 2020 figures. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a noticeable reduction. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X square meters in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, photographic film exports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, exports showed a measured expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 255% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Maldives (X square meters) was the main destination for photographic film exports from Sri Lanka, accounting for a 47% share of total exports. Moreover, photographic film exports to Maldives exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Germany (X square meters), threefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Myanmar (X square meters), with a 17% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Maldives amounted to +7.4%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Germany (+0.2% per year) and Myanmar (-31.3% per year).

In value terms, Maldives ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for photographic plates and film, photographic paper, paperboard and textiles and instant print film, sensitized, unexposed exports from Sri Lanka, comprising 89% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by India ($X), with a 3.2% share of total exports. It was followed by Germany, with a 2.1% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Maldives amounted to +15.7%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: India (-25.2% per year) and Germany (-11.0% per year).

The average photographic film export price stood at $X per square meter in 2021, waning by -19.5% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, saw a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 54% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per square meter in 2020, and then contracted sharply in the following year.

In 2021, after three years of decline, there was significant growth in overseas purchases of photographic plates and film, photographic paper, paperboard and textiles and instant print film, sensitized, unexposed, when their volume increased by 20% to X square meters. Overall, imports showed a mild increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 46%. Imports peaked in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, photographic film imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 47% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

China (X square meters), Japan (X square meters) and India (X square meters) were the main suppliers of photographic film imports to Sri Lanka, together accounting for 58% of total imports. These countries were followed by Germany, the United States, Belgium, the Netherlands, the United Arab Emirates, Singapore and the UK, which together accounted for a further 31%.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Germany (with a CAGR of +22.1%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest photographic film suppliers to Sri Lanka were Japan ($X), China ($X) and India ($X), with a combined 51% share of total imports. The United States, Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands, the UK, Singapore and the United Arab Emirates lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 28%.

The average photographic film import price stood at $X per square meter in 2021, picking up by 3.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the average import price increased by 30%. The import price peaked at $X per square meter in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Belgium ($X per square meter), while the price for the United Arab Emirates ($X per square meter) was amongst the lowest.
