Pimenta Pepper Market Size in Sri Lanka

For the fifth year in a row, the Sri Lankan pimenta pepper market recorded growth in sales value, which increased by 9.9% to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, the total consumption indicated a strong expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +8.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption increased by +59.6% against 2017 indices. Pimenta pepper consumption peaked in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Pimenta Pepper Exports

Exports from Sri Lanka

In 2022, after four years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas shipments of pimenta pepper, when their volume decreased by -39.1% to X tons. Overall, exports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when exports increased by 61% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2021, and then reduced markedly in the following year.

In value terms, pimenta pepper exports reduced rapidly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, posted a pronounced expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 50% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2021, and then dropped rapidly in the following year.

Exports by Country

Australia (X tons), India (X tons) and Maldives (X tons) were the main destinations of pimenta pepper exports from Sri Lanka, together comprising 44% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for India (with a CAGR of +41.8%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Australia ($X), Maldives ($X) and the United States ($X) constituted the largest markets for pimenta pepper exported from Sri Lanka worldwide, with a combined 52% share of total exports. Italy, India, Kuwait, Spain, Germany, Canada, New Zealand, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Qatar lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 40%.

Spain, with a CAGR of +25.2%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The average pimenta pepper export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, increasing by 12% against the previous year. In general, export price indicated a tangible increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, pimenta pepper export price increased by +108.2% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 an increase of 44%. The export price peaked in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Australia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Spain ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Saudi Arabia (+6.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Pimenta Pepper Imports

Imports into Sri Lanka

For the third year in a row, Sri Lanka recorded decline in purchases abroad of pimenta pepper, which decreased by -4.9% to X tons in 2022. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.6% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 36% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, pimenta pepper imports surged to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, showed a prominent increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when imports increased by 57%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2022, India (X tons) was the main pimenta pepper supplier to Sri Lanka, with a approx. 99% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from India totaled +3.5%.

In value terms, India ($X) constituted the largest supplier of pimenta pepper to Sri Lanka.

Import Prices by Country

The average pimenta pepper import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, jumping by 22% against the previous year. In general, the import price saw a strong increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the average import price increased by 27%. The import price peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

As there is only one major supplying country, the average price level is determined by prices for India.

From 2012 to 2022, the rate of growth in terms of prices for Myanmar amounted to +58.1% per year.
