Exports from Sri Lanka

In 2022, overseas shipments of polycarbonates (in primary forms) decreased by -98.5% to X kg, falling for the third consecutive year after six years of growth. Over the period under review, exports showed a slight downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 477% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, polycarbonate exports declined markedly to $X in 2022. In general, exports recorded a noticeable downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 279% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

China (X kg) was the main destination for polycarbonate exports from Sri Lanka, with a 79% share of total exports. Moreover, polycarbonate exports to China exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Maldives (X kg), fourfold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to China stood at +89.0%.

In value terms, Maldives ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for polycarbonates (in primary forms) exports from Sri Lanka, comprising 84% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by China ($X), with a 16% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Maldives amounted to +65.4%.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the average polycarbonate export price amounted to $X per ton, jumping by 121% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a pronounced descent. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Maldives ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to China amounted to $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Sweden (-2.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Imports into Sri Lanka

In 2022, imports of polycarbonates (in primary forms) into Sri Lanka shrank to X tons, with a decrease of -12.9% against the previous year's figure. In general, imports showed a mild curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when imports increased by 53% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, polycarbonate imports rose remarkably to $X in 2022. Overall, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 42% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In 2022, Thailand (X tons) constituted the largest polycarbonate supplier to Sri Lanka, accounting for a 71% share of total imports. Moreover, polycarbonate imports from Thailand exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons), sixfold. China (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 9% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from Thailand amounted to +7.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Taiwan (Chinese) (+1.4% per year) and China (+57.6% per year).

In value terms, Thailand ($X) constituted the largest supplier of polycarbonates (in primary forms) to Sri Lanka, comprising 73% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by China ($X), with a 9.3% share of total imports. It was followed by Taiwan (Chinese), with an 8.9% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Thailand stood at +8.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: China (+57.6% per year) and Taiwan (Chinese) (+1.8% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average polycarbonate import price amounted to $X per ton, growing by 29% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.3%. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Japan ($X per ton), while the price for India ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Malaysia (+9.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
