In 2021, the Sri Lankan sanitary towel and diaper market decreased by -19.4% to $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Overall, consumption, however, saw a resilient expansion. Sanitary towel and diaper consumption peaked at $X in 2020, and then reduced dramatically in the following year.

In value terms, sanitary towel and diaper production reduced dramatically to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, showed resilient growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when the production volume increased by 88% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production reached the maximum level at $X in 2020, and then fell remarkably in the following year.

Exports from Sri Lanka

In 2021, shipments abroad of sanitary towels, tampons, napkins and diapers decreased by -80.1% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year rising trend. In general, exports showed a abrupt contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 251%. The exports peaked at X tons in 2020, and then shrank sharply in the following year.

In value terms, sanitary towel and diaper exports contracted rapidly to $X in 2021. Overall, exports recorded a pronounced setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 149%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Finland (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons) and the UK (X tons) were the main destinations of sanitary towel and diaper exports from Sri Lanka, with a combined 15% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Oman, Costa Rica, Germany, Maldives, New Zealand and Canada, which together accounted for a further 12%.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Germany (with a CAGR of +69.5%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Germany ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for sanitary towels, tampons, napkins and diapers exports from Sri Lanka, comprising 14% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by the UK ($X), with a 2.8% share of total exports. It was followed by the Netherlands, with a 2.3% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value to Germany totaled +63.0%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the UK (-27.8% per year) and the Netherlands (+42.7% per year).

The average sanitary towel and diaper export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 254% against the previous year. Overall, the export price recorded prominent growth. As a result, the export price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Oman ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to New Zealand (+28.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Sanitary towel and diaper imports into Sri Lanka totaled X tons in 2021, remaining stable against 2020 figures. In general, imports showed a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 44%. Imports peaked in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in the near future.

In value terms, sanitary towel and diaper imports stood at $X in 2021. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +10.3% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -0.8% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 44% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, China (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of sanitary towel and diaper to Sri Lanka, accounting for a 80% share of total imports. Moreover, sanitary towel and diaper imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, India (X tons), sevenfold. The Philippines (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 1.8% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from China totaled +15.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: India (+29.6% per year) and the Philippines (-4.1% per year).

In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of sanitary towels, tampons, napkins and diapers to Sri Lanka, comprising 72% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by India ($X), with an 18% share of total imports. It was followed by the Philippines, with a 3.6% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from China amounted to +12.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: India (+26.9% per year) and the Philippines (-6.9% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The average sanitary towel and diaper import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 8.8% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a noticeable contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when the average import price increased by 26%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2017 to 2021, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the Philippines ($X per ton), while the price for China ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Vietnam (+1.7%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
