In value terms, preserved sardines exports soared to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 448% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Australia (X tons), Singapore (X tons) and New Zealand (X kg) were the main destinations of preserved sardines exports from Sri Lanka, together comprising 100% of total exports.

Imports peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, preserved sardines imports dropped markedly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a abrupt decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 392% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2021, and then contracted remarkably in the following year.

In 2022, Latvia (X tons) constituted the largest preserved sardines supplier to Sri Lanka, accounting for a 77% share of total imports. Moreover, preserved sardines imports from Latvia exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Portugal (X tons), threefold.
