In general, exports saw significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 200% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure in 2021 and are likely to see steady growth in the near future.
In value terms, silk yarn exports dropped markedly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports posted a strong expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 260% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X, and then dropped dramatically in the following year.
Exports by Country
Maldives (X kg) was the main destination for silk yarn exports from Sri Lanka, accounting for a 90% share of total exports. Moreover, silk yarn exports to Maldives exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Germany (X kg), ninefold.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Maldives amounted to +22.7%.
In value terms, Maldives ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for silk yarn and yarn spun from silk waste exports from Sri Lanka, comprising 91% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Germany ($X), with a 9.1% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value to Maldives amounted to +6.3%.
Export Prices by Country
The average silk yarn export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, shrinking by -64% against the previous year. Overall, the export price recorded a deep setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 135%. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Average prices varied noticeably for the major overseas markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Maldives ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Germany totaled $X per ton.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Maldives (-13.3%).

Imports into Sri Lanka
In 2021, silk yarn imports into Sri Lanka soared to X tons, growing by 373% against the previous year's figure. In general, imports saw a buoyant expansion. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country
In 2021, China (X tons) was the main supplier of silk yarn to Sri Lanka, accounting for a 98% share of total imports. It was followed by Hong Kong SAR (X kg), with a 1.6% share of total imports. Taiwan (Chinese) (X kg) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 0.3% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from China amounted to +72.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Hong Kong SAR (-26.3% per year) and Taiwan (Chinese) (-24.7% per year).
In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of silk yarn and yarn spun from silk waste to Sri Lanka, comprising 94% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Hong Kong SAR ($X), with a 3.9% share of total imports. It was followed by Taiwan (Chinese), with a 1.1% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from China stood at +43.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Hong Kong SAR (-26.0% per year) and Taiwan (Chinese) (-26.9% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the average silk yarn import price amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by -18.6% against the previous year. In general, the import price showed a abrupt decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the average import price increased by 53%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2021, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was India ($X per ton), while the price for China ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by India (+18.2%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
