Bahrain (X tons) was the main destination for sunflower-seed and safflower oil exports from Sri Lanka, with a 90% share of total exports. Moreover, sunflower-seed and safflower oil exports to Bahrain exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Maldives (X tons), tenfold.

The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the average export price increased by 33% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Maldives ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Bahrain totaled $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Oman (+39.4%).

Imports into Sri Lanka

After three years of growth, overseas purchases of sunflower-seed and safflower oil decreased by -27.7% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed buoyant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 113%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2021, and then contracted remarkably in the following year.

In value terms, sunflower-seed and safflower oil imports contracted rapidly to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a prominent increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 138%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then reduced rapidly in the following year.

Spain (X tons), Ukraine (X tons) and Malaysia (X tons) were the main suppliers of sunflower-seed and safflower oil imports to Sri Lanka, together accounting for 90% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Spain (with a CAGR of +60.8%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
