In 2022, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in shipments abroad of surgical gloves, when their volume increased by 14% to X tons. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a slight slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 44% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, surgical glove exports soared to $X in 2022. Overall, exports posted a pronounced increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when exports increased by 48% against the previous year. The exports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

The United States (X tons) was the main destination for surgical glove exports from Sri Lanka, accounting for a 31% share of total exports. Moreover, surgical glove exports to the United States exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, India (X tons), twofold. France (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 10% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to the United States was relatively modest. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: India (+8.7% per year) and France (+31.1% per year).

In value terms, the United States ($X) remains the key foreign market for surgical gloves exports from Sri Lanka, comprising 36% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by India ($X), with a 12% share of total exports. It was followed by Japan, with an 11% share.

In 2022, the average surgical glove export price amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 4.2% against the previous year. Overall, export price indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +5.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. After four years of decline, purchases abroad of surgical gloves increased by 262% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a abrupt contraction. Imports peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, Malaysia (X tons) constituted the largest surgical glove supplier to Sri Lanka, with a 80% share of total imports. The average surgical glove import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, with an increase of 3% against the previous year. Overall, import price indicated a resilient expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +5.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, surgical glove import price increased by +40.8% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 41%. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.
