The Sri Lankan concrete tile market fell to $X in 2022, with a decrease of -5% against the previous year. Overall, consumption, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. Exports from Sri Lanka

In 2022, overseas shipments of tiles, flagstones, bricks and similar articles, of cement, concrete or artificial stone decreased by -48.5% to X tons, falling for the sixth consecutive year after two years of growth. Overall, exports, however, enjoyed noticeable growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 778% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, concrete tile exports surged to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, recorded resilient growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 84% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in the near future.

Exports by Country

Maldives (X tons) was the main destination for concrete tile exports from Sri Lanka, with a 91% share of total exports. Moreover, concrete tile exports to Maldives exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Australia (X tons), more than tenfold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Maldives amounted to +7.6%.

In value terms, Australia ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for tiles, flagstones, bricks and similar articles, of cement, concrete or artificial stone exports from Sri Lanka, comprising 61% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Maldives ($X), with a 24% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to Australia amounted to +75.4%.

Export Prices by Country

The average concrete tile export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, picking up by 223% against the previous year. Overall, the export price continues to indicate a remarkable increase. As a result, the export price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Australia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Maldives stood at $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Australia (+24.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Sri Lanka

In 2022, overseas purchases of tiles, flagstones, bricks and similar articles, of cement, concrete or artificial stone decreased by -58.8% to X tons, falling for the third consecutive year after two years of growth. In general, imports recorded a abrupt curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 73%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, concrete tile imports reduced sharply to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports saw a abrupt decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 143%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2022, India (X tons) constituted the largest concrete tile supplier to Sri Lanka, accounting for a 76% share of total imports. Moreover, concrete tile imports from India exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Italy (X tons), threefold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from India totaled -12.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Italy (+2.0% per year) and China (-22.8% per year).

In value terms, India ($X), Italy ($X) and China ($X) were the largest concrete tile suppliers to Sri Lanka, with a combined 100% share of total imports.

In terms of the main suppliers, Italy, with a CAGR of +8.8%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced a decline.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average concrete tile import price amounted to $X per ton, remaining stable against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a prominent expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when the average import price increased by 133%. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2020; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while the price for China ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
