Japan (X tons) was the main destination for vinegar-preserved vegetable exports from Sri Lanka, with a 40% share of total exports. Moreover, vinegar-preserved vegetable exports to Japan exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Spain (X tons), fourfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Australia (X tons), with an 8.9% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Japan stood at +1.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Spain (-3.3% per year) and Australia (-1.2% per year).
In value terms, Japan ($X) remains the key foreign market for vegetables in vinegar other than potatoes exports from Sri Lanka, comprising 45% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Spain ($X), with an 11% share of total exports. It was followed by Taiwan (Chinese), with a 7.1% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Japan stood at +2.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Spain (-2.8% per year) and Taiwan (Chinese) (+2.7% per year).

Overall, imports saw a pronounced decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 662% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2021, and then declined significantly in the following year.
In value terms, vinegar-preserved vegetable imports fell remarkably to $X in 2022. In general, imports saw a abrupt slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 493%. Imports peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2022, India (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of vinegar-preserved vegetable to Sri Lanka, with a 78% share of total imports. Moreover, vinegar-preserved vegetable imports from India exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, China (X tons), sevenfold. Spain (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 6.1% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from India amounted to +1.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: China (0.0% per year) and Spain (-4.3% per year).
In value terms, India ($X) constituted the largest supplier of vegetables in vinegar other than potatoes to Sri Lanka, comprising 78% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by China ($X), with a 9.4% share of total imports. It was followed by Spain, with a 6.8% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from India totaled +3.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: China (0.0% per year) and Spain (-5.9% per year).
