Whey Market Size in Sri Lanka

The Sri Lankan whey market reduced sharply to $X in 2022, waning by -21.6% against the previous year. This figure reflects the total revenues of producers and importers (excluding logistics costs, retail marketing costs, and retailers' margins, which will be included in the final consumer price). In general, consumption, however, continues to indicate modest growth. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X, and then declined notably in the following year.

Exports from Sri Lanka

For the third year in a row, Sri Lanka recorded growth in shipments abroad of whey, which increased by 36% to X tons in 2022. In general, exports saw a pronounced expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 428%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, whey exports surged to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports recorded resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 535% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Germany (X tons) was the main destination for whey exports from Sri Lanka, with a 93% share of total exports. Moreover, whey exports to Germany exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Slovenia (X tons), more than tenfold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Germany stood at +21.7%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Slovenia (+53.1% per year) and Maldives (+67.4% per year).

In value terms, Germany ($X) remains the key foreign market for whey exports from Sri Lanka, comprising 72% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Slovenia ($X), with a 15% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to Germany totaled +19.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Slovenia (+75.6% per year) and Maldives (+138.7% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The average whey export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, approximately reflecting the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, continues to indicate moderate growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the average export price increased by 109%. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Maldives ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Germany ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Maldives (+42.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Whey Imports

Imports into Sri Lanka

In 2022, imports of whey into Sri Lanka contracted significantly to X tons, dropping by -29.2% against the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw perceptible growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 127% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons, and then reduced dramatically in the following year.

In value terms, whey imports contracted dramatically to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, saw a modest increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 134%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then declined rapidly in the following year.

Imports by Country

Poland (X tons), Canada (X tons) and New Zealand (X tons) were the main suppliers of whey imports to Sri Lanka, together comprising 88% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Poland (with a CAGR of +46.0%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, New Zealand ($X), Canada ($X) and Poland ($X) appeared to be the largest whey suppliers to Sri Lanka, together comprising 81% of total imports.

Poland, with a CAGR of +36.6%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The average whey import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, rising by 18% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, saw a mild reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 an increase of 23%. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was France ($X per ton), while the price for Poland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United States (+8.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
