Overall, exports enjoyed a remarkable increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 800%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X cubic meters. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, wood chips and particles exports rose sharply to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, saw a drastic downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 214%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Qatar (X cubic meters) was the main destination for wood chips and particles exports from Sri Lanka, accounting for a 76% share of total exports. Moreover, wood chips and particles exports to Qatar exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Japan (X cubic meters), sevenfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Maldives (X cubic meters), with a 5.1% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Qatar amounted to +288.6%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Japan (+16.9% per year) and Maldives (+24.6% per year).
In value terms, Qatar ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for wood chips and particles exports from Sri Lanka, comprising 58% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Japan ($X), with a 27% share of total exports. It was followed by France, with a 12% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to Qatar amounted to +454.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Japan (+6.7% per year) and France (+37.4% per year).

In 2022, the average wood chips and particles export price amounted to $X per cubic meter, reducing by -20.4% against the previous year. In general, the export price saw a abrupt contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 an increase of 149% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per cubic meter in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was France ($X per cubic meter), while the average price for exports to Maldives ($X per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Qatar (+42.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Sri Lanka
For the fifth year in a row, Sri Lanka recorded decline in supplies from abroad of wood chips and particles, which decreased by -50% to X cubic meters in 2022. Overall, imports showed a abrupt descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 2,871% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X cubic meters. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, wood chips and particles imports declined markedly to $X in 2022. In general, imports saw a dramatic slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 2,462% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
India (X cubic meters), the United Arab Emirates (X cubic meters) and China (X cubic meters) were the main suppliers of wood chips and particles imports to Sri Lanka, together accounting for 75% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by the United Arab Emirates (with a CAGR of 0.0%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X), India ($X) and China ($X) were the largest wood chips and particles suppliers to Sri Lanka.
