The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 22%. Over the period under review, production of hit record highs at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports from Sri Lanka
In 2021, shipments abroad of wood chips, parts, residues, pellets and other agglomerates increased by 9% to X cubic meters, rising for the third consecutive year after two years of decline. Over the period under review, total exports indicated a moderate expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +110.7% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 43% against the previous year. The exports peaked in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.
In value terms, exports of wood chips, parts, residues, pellets and other agglomerates skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, total exports indicated a tangible increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.6% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +98.4% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 33% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports of hit record highs in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in the near future.
Exports by Country
Oman (X cubic meters) was the main destination for exports of wood chips, parts, residues, pellets and other agglomerates from Sri Lanka, with a 81% share of total exports. Moreover, exports of wood chips, parts, residues, pellets and other agglomerates to Oman exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, South Korea (X cubic meters), more than tenfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Qatar (X cubic meters), with a 5% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Oman amounted to +3.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: South Korea (+9.9% per year) and Qatar (+20.9% per year).
In value terms, Oman ($X) remains the key foreign market for wood chips, parts, residues, pellets and other agglomerates exports from Sri Lanka, comprising 81% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Qatar ($X), with a 3.8% share of total exports. It was followed by South Korea, with a 3.5% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value to Oman amounted to +11.7%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Qatar (+10.1% per year) and South Korea (+17.8% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the average export price for wood chips, parts, residues, pellets and other agglomerates amounted to $X per cubic meter, with an increase of 10% against the previous year. Over the last nine-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.5%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 an increase of 22% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per cubic meter in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Kuwait ($X per cubic meter), while the average price for exports to the United Arab Emirates ($X per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the United Arab Emirates (+18.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Sri Lanka
In 2021, supplies from abroad of wood chips, parts, residues, pellets and other agglomerates was finally on the rise to reach X cubic meters for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year declining trend. Over the period under review, imports posted a significant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 214% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X cubic meters. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of imports of failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, imports of wood chips, parts, residues, pellets and other agglomerates soared to $X in 2021. Overall, imports saw prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 265% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of imports of failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
The United Arab Emirates (X cubic meters), Malaysia (X cubic meters) and France (X cubic meters) were the main suppliers of imports of wood chips, parts, residues, pellets and other agglomerates to Sri Lanka, with a combined 58% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by the United Arab Emirates (with a CAGR of +1,099.6%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Malaysia ($X) constituted the largest supplier of wood chips, parts, residues, pellets and other agglomerates to Sri Lanka, comprising 56% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by France ($X), with a 17% share of total imports. It was followed by Bulgaria, with a 6.7% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Malaysia stood at +10.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: France (+27.7% per year) and Bulgaria (+24.9% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the average import price for wood chips, parts, residues, pellets and other agglomerates amounted to $X per cubic meter, shrinking by -27.2% against the previous year. In general, the import price recorded a abrupt contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 16% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per cubic meter in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Malaysia ($X per cubic meter), while the price for the United Arab Emirates (less than $X per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Saudi Arabia (+28.8%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
