In 2021, the Sri Lankan wrapping papers market was finally on the rise to reach $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. In general, the total consumption indicated a strong expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.4% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Over the period under review, the market reached the peak level in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Wrapping Papers Exports

Exports from Sri Lanka

In 2021, shipments abroad of wrapping paper, packaging paper and paperboard decreased by -9% to X tons, falling for the third year in a row after three years of growth. Over the period under review, exports, however, enjoyed pronounced growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 94% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, wrapping papers exports fell markedly to $X in 2021. Overall, exports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 45% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Bangladesh (X tons) was the main destination for wrapping papers exports from Sri Lanka, with a 50% share of total exports. Moreover, wrapping papers exports to Bangladesh exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, India (X tons), twofold. Malawi (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 4% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Bangladesh totaled +43.7%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: India (-0.9% per year) and Malawi (-3.5% per year).

In value terms, Bangladesh ($X), India ($X) and Kenya ($X) constituted the largest markets for wrapping papers exported from Sri Lanka worldwide, together accounting for 62% of total exports. These countries were followed by Malawi, Maldives, Jordan, Ethiopia, Oman and Indonesia, which together accounted for a further 25%.

Jordan, with a CAGR of +134.2%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the average wrapping papers export price amounted to $X per ton, declining by -13.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price continues to indicate a pronounced shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 an increase of 61%. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Kenya ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Oman ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Kenya (+4.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Sri Lanka

In 2021, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in purchases abroad of wrapping paper, packaging paper and paperboard, when their volume increased by 16% to X tons. Overall, total imports indicated a prominent increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.4% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 44% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, wrapping papers imports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a strong expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.5% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2021, India (X tons) constituted the largest wrapping papers supplier to Sri Lanka, accounting for a 29% share of total imports. Moreover, wrapping papers imports from India exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, South Africa (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Sweden (X tons), with a 9% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from India stood at +16.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: South Africa (+13.8% per year) and Sweden (-4.8% per year).

In value terms, India ($X), South Africa ($X) and Sweden ($X) constituted the largest wrapping papers suppliers to Sri Lanka, together accounting for 46% of total imports. Russia, Spain, Bosnia and Herzegovina, China, Austria, Slovenia, the United States, Australia, Estonia and Brazil lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 28%.

In terms of the main suppliers, Slovenia, with a CAGR of +24.6%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the average wrapping papers import price amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 20% against the previous year. Over the last nine-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.1%. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Spain ($X per ton), while the price for Brazil ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Russia (+5.8%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
