Imports into Sudan
Carbonate imports into Sudan declined sharply to X tons in 2021, with a decrease of -27.4% against 2020. In general, imports recorded a mild curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 67%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, carbonate imports shrank remarkably to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a buoyant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 109%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then contracted sharply in the following year.

China (X tons), Turkey (X tons) and the United Arab Emirates (X tons) were the main suppliers of carbonate imports to Sudan, with a combined 69% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Syrian Arab Republic, Russia, Jordan, Italy, Romania, Sweden, India, Egypt and Bosnia and Herzegovina, which together accounted for a further 24%.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Russia (with a CAGR of +37.1%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of carbonates and peroxocarbonates to Sudan, comprising 47% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Turkey ($X), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by Sweden, with a 6.4% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from China stood at +12.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Turkey (+17.0% per year) and Sweden (+20.8% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the average carbonate import price amounted to $X per ton, dropping by -6.9% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, continues to indicate strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the average import price increased by 62% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton, and then dropped in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Sweden ($X per ton), while the price for Syrian Arab Republic ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
