Powdered Milk Market Size in Sudan

The Sudanese powdered milk market surged to $X in 2022, picking up by 35% against the previous year. This figure reflects the total revenues of producers and importers (excluding logistics costs, retail marketing costs, and retailers' margins, which will be included in the final consumer price). Over the period under review, consumption, however, recorded a mild shrinkage. Powdered milk consumption peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Exports from Sudan

For the third year in a row, Sudan recorded growth in shipments abroad of powdered milk, which increased by 13% to X tons in 2019. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a mild contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 611% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2019, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, powdered milk exports amounted to $X in 2019. Overall, exports showed a moderate increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 173%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2019, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Ethiopia (X tons) was the main destination for powdered milk exports from Sudan, accounting for a 69% share of total exports. Moreover, powdered milk exports to Ethiopia exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Uganda (X tons), twofold.

From 2012 to 2019, the average annual growth rate of volume to Ethiopia stood at +71.7%.

In value terms, Ethiopia ($X) and Uganda ($X) constituted the largest markets for powdered milk exported from Sudan worldwide.

Ethiopia, with a CAGR of +32.5%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review.

The average powdered milk export price stood at $X per ton in 2019, waning by -10.4% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, enjoyed prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the average export price increased by 547% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2019, the average export prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied somewhat for the major overseas markets. In 2019, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Uganda ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Ethiopia stood at $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2019, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Uganda (+8.8%).

Imports into Sudan

In 2022, approx. X tons of powdered milk were imported into Sudan; rising by 36% compared with the year before. In general, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 58%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, powdered milk imports surged to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a mild descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 47% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

New Zealand (X tons), the United Arab Emirates (X tons) and Malaysia (X tons) were the main suppliers of powdered milk imports to Sudan, with a combined 82% share of total imports. The Netherlands, Sweden, Argentina, Poland, Canada and Singapore lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 11%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Sweden (with a CAGR of +23.1%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest powdered milk suppliers to Sudan were New Zealand ($X), the United Arab Emirates ($X) and Malaysia ($X), together comprising 81% of total imports. The Netherlands, Argentina, Sweden, Canada, Poland and Singapore lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 11%.

The average powdered milk import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, standing approx. at the previous year. Overall, the import price continues to indicate a mild reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 26%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2022, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was New Zealand ($X per ton), while the price for Poland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
