In 2021, the Sudanese dry peas market decreased by -17.4% to $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Overall, consumption, however, recorded modest growth. Over the period under review, the market reached the peak level at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, shipments abroad of peas (dry) decreased by -2.9% to X tons, falling for the third year in a row after seven years of growth. Overall, exports, however, enjoyed a significant expansion. The exports peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, dry peas exports rose sharply to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, posted a significant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 105%. Ethiopia (X tons) was the main destination for dry peas exports from Sudan, accounting for a 78% share of total exports. Moreover, dry peas exports to Ethiopia exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Pakistan (X tons), fourfold.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Ethiopia totaled +85.9%.

In value terms, Pakistan ($X) and Ethiopia ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for dry peas exported from Sudan worldwide.

The average dry peas export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 9.1% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when the average export price increased by 44%. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in supplies from abroad of peas (dry), when their volume decreased by -36.1% to X tons. Overall, imports, however, recorded a mild expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 253% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, dry peas imports fell to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, recorded a mild increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 209% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, the United States (X tons) constituted the largest dry peas supplier to Sudan, accounting for a 37% share of total imports. Moreover, dry peas imports from the United States exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Canada (X tons), twofold. Egypt (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 13% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from the United States totaled +3.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Canada (+15.1% per year) and Egypt (+22.9% per year).

In value terms, the United States ($X) constituted the largest supplier of dry peas to Sudan, comprising 34% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Canada ($X), with a 16% share of total imports. It was followed by Egypt, with a 13% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from the United States stood at +1.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Canada (+12.7% per year) and Egypt (+20.5% per year).
