Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, refined olive oil imports shrank sharply to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, saw prominent growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 194% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2021, and then contracted significantly in the following year.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Lebanon (X tons) constituted the largest refined olive oil supplier to Sudan, with a 62% share of total imports. Moreover, refined olive oil imports from Lebanon exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the United Arab Emirates (X tons), fourfold. Italy (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 7% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from Lebanon stood at +27.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the United Arab Emirates (+53.1% per year) and Italy (+19.3% per year).
In value terms, Lebanon ($X) constituted the largest supplier of refined olive oil to Sudan, comprising 72% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by the United Arab Emirates ($X), with a 13% share of total imports. It was followed by Italy, with a 6.7% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from Lebanon totaled +31.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the United Arab Emirates (+59.0% per year) and Italy (+19.4% per year).

The average refined olive oil import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, which is down by -5.8% against the previous year. In general, import price indicated a tangible increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, refined olive oil import price increased by +13.4% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the average import price increased by 80% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2018 to 2022, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Spain ($X per ton), while the price for China ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Syrian Arab Republic (+8.9%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
