Tomato Market Size in Sudan
In 2021, the Sudanese tomato market decreased by -2.4% to $X for the first time since 2016, thus ending a four-year rising trend. Over the period under review, the total consumption indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.5% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, consumption increased by +24.7% against 2016 indices. Over the period under review, the market reached the peak level at $X in 2020, and then reduced slightly in the following year.
Tomato Production in Sudan
In value terms, tomato production shrank to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, saw a resilient expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when the production volume increased by 111% against the previous year. The average yield of tomatoes in Sudan totaled X tons per ha in 2021, flattening at the year before. Over the period under review, the yield, however, showed a slight setback. For the fourth year in a row, Sudan recorded growth in shipments abroad of tomatoes, which increased by 1.2% to X kg in 2019. In general, exports, however, saw a abrupt decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 194%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X kg in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2019, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, tomato exports rose sharply to $X in 2019. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a pronounced setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 180%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2019, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Saudi Arabia (X kg), Bahrain (X kg) and Kuwait (X kg) were the main destinations of tomato exports from Sudan.
From 2014 to 2019, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Bahrain (with a CAGR of 0.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Saudi Arabia ($X), Bahrain ($X) and Kuwait ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for tomato exported from Sudan worldwide.

In 2019, the average tomato export price amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 5.8% against the previous year. Over the last five-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.9%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 14%. The export price peaked in 2019 and is likely to see gradual growth in the near future.
Average prices varied noticeably for the major export markets. In 2019, the country with the highest price was Bahrain ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Kuwait ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2014 to 2019, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Qatar (+487.9%).

Imports into Sudan
In 2021, purchases abroad of tomatoes decreased by -16.5% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after five years of growth. Overall, imports, however, posted a notable increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 135%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, tomato imports stood at $X in 2021. In general, imports showed a noticeable slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 94%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Ethiopia (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of tomato to Sudan, accounting for a 74% share of total imports. Moreover, tomato imports from Ethiopia exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Uganda (X kg), fourfold. The third position in this ranking was held by Kenya (X kg), with a 5.4% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Ethiopia totaled +8.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Uganda (+27.2% per year) and Kenya (-2.8% per year).
In value terms, Ethiopia ($X) constituted the largest supplier of tomato to Sudan, comprising 68% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Uganda ($X), with a 21% share of total imports. It was followed by Egypt, with a 5.8% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Ethiopia amounted to +14.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Uganda (+19.1% per year) and Egypt (-14.1% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the average tomato import price amounted to $X per ton, growing by 20% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a drastic downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 an increase of 51%. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while the price for Kenya ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Egypt (+17.7%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
