Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a sharp contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 185% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X litres in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, imports of spirits, liqueurs and other spirituous beverages reached $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, recorded a deep downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 72%. Over the period under review, imports of reached the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, Ethiopia (X litres) constituted the largest spirits, liqueurs and other spirituous beverages supplier to Sudan, accounting for a 84% share of total imports. Moreover, imports of spirits, liqueurs and other spirituous beverages from Ethiopia exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Uganda (X litres), tenfold.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Ethiopia stood at -24.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Uganda (-26.6% per year) and the United Arab Emirates (-20.1% per year).
In value terms, Ethiopia ($X) constituted the largest supplier of spirits, liqueurs and other spirituous beverages to Sudan, comprising 82% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Uganda ($X), with a 5.5% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from Ethiopia stood at -18.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Uganda (-18.7% per year) and the United Arab Emirates (-19.1% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the average import price for spirits, liqueurs and other spirituous beverages amounted to $X per litre, declining by -18.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, continues to indicate a remarkable increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when the average import price increased by 47%. The import price peaked at $X per litre in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the United Arab Emirates ($X per litre), while the price for Uganda ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Uganda (+10.8%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
