For the sixth consecutive year, the Swedish cheese market recorded growth in sales value, which increased by 3% to $X in 2021. Overall, consumption, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Cheese consumption peaked at $X in 2014; afterwards, it flattened through to 2021.
Cheese Production in Sweden
In value terms, cheese production reached $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, recorded a noticeable descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the production volume increased by 2.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production attained the peak level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, production failed to regain momentum.

Cheese exports from Sweden surged to X tons in 2021, growing by 29% against the year before. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.5% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, cheese exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The exports peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Denmark (X tons), Finland (X tons) and the UK (X tons) were the main destinations of cheese exports from Sweden, with a combined 76% share of total exports. These countries were followed by France, Norway, Portugal and Poland, which together accounted for a further 18%.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Portugal (with a CAGR of +344,719.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Denmark ($X), Finland ($X) and Norway ($X) were the largest markets for cheese exported from Sweden worldwide, with a combined 80% share of total exports. The UK, Poland, France and Portugal lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 13%.
Portugal, with a CAGR of +39,224.4%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the average cheese export price amounted to $X per ton, approximately equating the previous year. In general, the export price continues to indicate a slight decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when the average export price increased by 8.7%. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Norway ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Portugal ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Norway (+0.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Imports into Sweden
For the sixth consecutive year, Sweden recorded growth in overseas purchases of cheese, which increased by 2.4% to X tons in 2021. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.2% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 23% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, cheese imports totaled $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +3.5% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 30%. Imports peaked in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Denmark (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of cheese to Sweden, accounting for a 37% share of total imports. Moreover, cheese imports from Denmark exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Germany (X tons), twofold. The Netherlands (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with an 18% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Denmark stood at +6.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Germany (+4.8% per year) and the Netherlands (+0.1% per year).
In value terms, the largest cheese suppliers to Sweden were Denmark ($X), the Netherlands ($X) and Italy ($X), with a combined 65% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Germany, France, Cyprus, Greece and the UK, which together accounted for a further 30%.
Cyprus, with a CAGR of +30.7%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The average cheese import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 4.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when the average import price increased by 16%. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Cyprus ($X per ton), while the price for Germany ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the UK (+1.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
