The Swedish graphite market was estimated at $X in 2021, picking up by 8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, graphite exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, exports continue to indicate strong growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 46% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

South Korea (X tons), India (X tons) and Japan (X tons) were the main destinations of graphite exports from Sweden, together accounting for 74% of total exports. These countries were followed by Finland, Brazil, the Czech Republic, the United States and Thailand, which together accounted for a further 25%.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Finland (with a CAGR of +93.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, graphite export price decreased by -5.6% against 2017 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the average export price increased by 57% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2018 to 2021, the average export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was the United States ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to the Czech Republic ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the United States (+29.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, supplies from abroad of graphite (natural) increased by 20% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Overall, imports saw a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 40% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, graphite imports rose notably to $X in 2021. In general, total imports indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.4% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +17.1% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 39% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Germany (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of graphite to Sweden, with a 80% share of total imports. Moreover, graphite imports from Germany exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Norway (X tons), fivefold.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from Germany amounted to +5.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Norway (+63.9% per year) and the Czech Republic (-5.8% per year).

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while the price for Norway ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Czech Republic (+1.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
