For the fourth consecutive year, the Swedish lactose market recorded growth in sales value, which increased by 49% to $X in 2022. In general, consumption continues to indicate a buoyant increase. As a result, consumption attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In 2022, the amount of lactose and lactose syrup exported from Sweden reduced markedly to X tons, with a decrease of -19.2% on 2021. Overall, exports, however, recorded a temperate increase. Denmark (X tons) was the main destination for lactose exports from Sweden, with a 54% share of total exports. Moreover, lactose exports to Denmark exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Iceland (X tons), twofold. Lithuania (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with an 8% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Denmark was relatively modest. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Iceland (+23.6% per year) and Lithuania (+21.9% per year).

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Iceland ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to the Czech Republic ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the UK (+8.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Sweden
In 2022, approx. X tons of lactose and lactose syrup were imported into Sweden; growing by 30% compared with 2021. Overall, total imports indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +7.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +83.4% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 39% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, lactose imports soared to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports posted a resilient expansion. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In 2022, Denmark (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of lactose to Sweden, accounting for a 72% share of total imports. Moreover, lactose imports from Denmark exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Germany (X tons), fourfold. The third position in this ranking was held by the Netherlands (X tons), with a 9.4% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Denmark totaled +16.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Germany (-6.4% per year) and the Netherlands (+19.2% per year).
In value terms, Denmark ($X) constituted the largest supplier of lactose and lactose syrup to Sweden, comprising 68% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Germany ($X), with a 17% share of total imports. It was followed by the Netherlands, with an 11% share.

The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the highest price was recorded for prices from the Netherlands ($X per ton) and Germany ($X per ton), while the price for Poland ($X per ton) and the UK ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Denmark (+0.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
