Molluscs Market Size in Sweden
After two years of growth, the Swedish molluscs market decreased by -2.4% to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, the total consumption indicated a noticeable increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.3% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, consumption increased by +32.7% against 2018 indices. Molluscs consumption peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

In general, the total production indicated tangible growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.3% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production increased by +41.6% against 2018 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 75%. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, production remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, approx. X tons of molluscs (scallops, mussels, cuttle fish, squid and octopus) were exported from Sweden; with a decrease of -19.6% on the year before. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw mild growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 188%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons, and then contracted rapidly in the following year.
In value terms, molluscs exports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a prominent increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 320% against the previous year. The exports peaked in 2021 and are likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.
Exports by Country
Norway (X tons) was the main destination for molluscs exports from Sweden, accounting for a 58% share of total exports. Moreover, molluscs exports to Norway exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Denmark (X tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was held by Finland (X tons), with a 14% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Norway stood at +23.7%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Denmark (-2.6% per year) and Finland (-10.7% per year).
In value terms, Norway ($X) remains the key foreign market for molluscs (scallops, mussels, cuttle fish, squid and octopus) exports from Sweden, comprising 61% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Denmark ($X), with a 28% share of total exports. It was followed by Finland, with a 7.9% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value to Norway amounted to +52.3%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Denmark (+11.7% per year) and Finland (-8.5% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the average molluscs export price amounted to $X per ton, surging by 53% against the previous year. In general, the export price posted a prominent expansion. As a result, the export price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Denmark ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Italy ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Norway (+23.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Sweden
In 2021, purchases abroad of molluscs (scallops, mussels, cuttle fish, squid and octopus) increased by 6.4% to X tons for the first time since 2013, thus ending a seven-year declining trend. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a mild downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 17% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, molluscs imports rose rapidly to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 12% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Denmark (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of molluscs to Sweden, with a 37% share of total imports. Moreover, molluscs imports from Denmark exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Ireland (X tons), fourfold. The third position in this ranking was held by China (X tons), with an 8.1% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Denmark amounted to -1.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Ireland (+18.1% per year) and China (-0.6% per year).
In value terms, Denmark ($X), Canada ($X) and the United States ($X) appeared to be the largest molluscs suppliers to Sweden, together accounting for 63% of total imports. The Netherlands, Germany, China, New Zealand, Spain, Ireland, Belgium and Vietnam lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 34%.
Among the main suppliers, Spain, with a CAGR of +26.5%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the average molluscs import price amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 4.5% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.6%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when the average import price increased by 16% against the previous year. The import price peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Canada ($X per ton), while the price for Ireland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Canada (+6.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
