For the third year in a row, the Swedish soft drink market recorded decline in sales value, which decreased by -47.3% to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, consumption recorded a abrupt descent. Soft drink consumption peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, soft drink exports expanded remarkably to $X in 2021. Overall, exports enjoyed resilient growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 38%. The exports peaked in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.
Exports by Country
Norway (X litres) was the main destination for soft drink exports from Sweden, accounting for a 34% share of total exports. Moreover, soft drink exports to Norway exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, the UK (X litres), threefold. The third position in this ranking was held by Germany (X litres), with a 12% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Norway amounted to +18.7%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the UK (+29.9% per year) and Germany (+59.0% per year).
In value terms, Norway ($X) remains the key foreign market for soft drink exports from Sweden, comprising 30% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Finland ($X), with a 12% share of total exports. It was followed by the UK, with an 11% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Norway amounted to +11.3%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Finland (+11.0% per year) and the UK (+23.0% per year).

In 2021, the average soft drink export price amounted to $X per litre, reducing by -1.6% against the previous year. In general, the export price recorded a deep reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 5.6%. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per litre in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Finland ($X per litre), while the average price for exports to Germany ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Spain (-1.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Soft drink imports into Sweden rose sharply to X litres in 2021, picking up by 14% on the year before. In general, imports showed a prominent expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 42% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, soft drink imports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, total imports indicated strong growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +8.5% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +16.6% against 2018 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 26% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

The Netherlands (X litres), Germany (X litres) and Austria (X litres) were the main suppliers of soft drink imports to Sweden, with a combined 60% share of total imports. Denmark, Ireland, Norway, Belgium, Finland, Poland, France, Spain, the UK and Italy lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 36%.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Spain (with a CAGR of +38.9%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the Netherlands ($X), Germany ($X) and Austria ($X) were the largest soft drink suppliers to Sweden, with a combined 58% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Denmark, Ireland, Belgium, France, Finland, the UK, Spain, Norway, Italy and Poland, which together accounted for a further 37%.
Among the main suppliers, Italy, with a CAGR of +27.2%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average soft drink import price stood at $X per litre in 2021, picking up by 3.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a perceptible curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the average import price increased by 9.5% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per litre. From 2014 to 2021, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was France ($X per litre), while the price for Norway ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Finland (+5.6%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
