In 2021, the Swedish semiconductor device market was finally on the rise to reach $X after four years of decline. Over the period under review, the total consumption indicated a moderate expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.6% over the last nine-year period. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X units, and then contracted in the following year.
In value terms, semiconductor device exports fell slightly to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, enjoyed a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 52%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2020, and then shrank slightly in the following year.
Exports by Country
The United States (X units) was the main destination for semiconductor device exports from Sweden, accounting for a 27% share of total exports. Moreover, semiconductor device exports to the United States exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, the UK (X units), twofold. Estonia (X units) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 12% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to the United States totaled +7.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the UK (+6.6% per year) and Estonia (+59.1% per year).
In value terms, the United States ($X), the UK ($X) and Finland ($X) were the largest markets for semiconductor device exported from Sweden worldwide, with a combined 58% share of total exports. These countries were followed by China, Estonia, Malaysia, Costa Rica, Poland, Australia, Japan, Denmark, Thailand and Vietnam, which together accounted for a further 21%.
Among the main countries of destination, Malaysia, with a CAGR of +97.4%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the average semiconductor device export price amounted to $X per unit, standing approx. at the previous year. In general, the export price continues to indicate buoyant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 an increase of 75% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the maximum at $X per unit in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the UK ($X per unit), while the average price for exports to Denmark ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Vietnam (+64.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Sweden
In 2021, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas purchases of semiconductor devices, when their volume decreased by -13.5% to X units. Over the period under review, imports showed a perceptible descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 161%. Imports peaked at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, semiconductor device imports dropped dramatically to $X in 2021. In general, imports recorded a pronounced slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 31% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2020, and then contracted remarkably in the following year.
Imports by Country
China (X units), Germany (X units) and the Netherlands (X units) were the main suppliers of semiconductor device imports to Sweden, together accounting for 67% of total imports. The UK, the United States, Hong Kong SAR, Malaysia, Finland, Norway, Singapore and Canada lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 23%.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Malaysia (with a CAGR of +117.0%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the United States ($X), Germany ($X) and the Netherlands ($X) were the largest semiconductor device suppliers to Sweden, with a combined 60% share of total imports. China, Malaysia, the UK, Finland, Hong Kong SAR, Norway, Singapore and Canada lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 21%.
Among the main suppliers, Malaysia, with a CAGR of +143.4%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the average semiconductor device import price amounted to $X per unit, falling by -17.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, continues to indicate a mild increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 an increase of 146%. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $X per unit in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($X per unit), while the price for Hong Kong SAR ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
