The Swedish sugary soft drink market was estimated at $X in 2022, increasing by 8.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Overall, exports, however, enjoyed a resilient expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when exports increased by 62% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X litres in 2021, and then declined markedly in the following year.
In value terms, sugary soft drink exports fell markedly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a resilient expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 51% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2021, and then declined significantly in the following year.
Exports by Country
Norway (X litres) was the main destination for sugary soft drink exports from Sweden, accounting for a 62% share of total exports. Moreover, sugary soft drink exports to Norway exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Iceland (X litres), fivefold. Denmark (X litres) ranked third in terms of total exports with an 11% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Norway amounted to +4.6%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Iceland (+47.5% per year) and Denmark (+22.7% per year).
In value terms, Norway ($X) remains the key foreign market for sugary soft drinks exports from Sweden, comprising 53% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Iceland ($X), with an 8.6% share of total exports. It was followed by Denmark, with a 7.2% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Norway stood at +2.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Iceland (+43.9% per year) and Denmark (+14.4% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The average sugary soft drink export price stood at $X per litre in 2022, approximately equating the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 13% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per litre in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Finland ($X per litre), while the average price for exports to Denmark ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Finland (+3.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Imports into Sweden
In 2022, purchases abroad of sugary soft drinks increased by 27% to X litres, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. In general, imports saw a strong increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when imports increased by 37%. Imports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, sugary soft drink imports expanded rapidly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports showed prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 36% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in the near future.
Imports by Country
In 2022, the Netherlands (X litres) constituted the largest supplier of sugary soft drink to Sweden, accounting for a 37% share of total imports. Moreover, sugary soft drink imports from the Netherlands exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Germany (X litres), twofold. Austria (X litres) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 14% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from the Netherlands amounted to +19.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Germany (+2.0% per year) and Austria (+10.9% per year).
In value terms, the largest sugary soft drink suppliers to Sweden were the Netherlands ($X), Austria ($X) and Germany ($X), together comprising 66% of total imports. Ireland, Denmark, France and Norway lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 21%.
Ireland, with a CAGR of +81.1%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average sugary soft drink import price amounted to $X per litre, which is down by -9.9% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 an increase of 11%. The import price peaked at $X per litre in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Austria ($X per litre), while the price for Norway ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Denmark (+6.9%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
