Exports from Sweden
In 2022, shipments abroad of video game consoles decreased by -20.8% to X units for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Over the period under review, exports, however, posted a pronounced expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 64%. The exports peaked at X units in 2021, and then reduced rapidly in the following year.
In value terms, video game console exports contracted significantly to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, posted a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 80%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2021, and then contracted notably in the following year.
Exports by Country
Norway (X units), Denmark (X units) and Finland (X units) were the main destinations of video game console exports from Sweden, together accounting for 92% of total exports. These countries were followed by the UK and Estonia, which together accounted for a further 3.6%.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Estonia (with a CAGR of +17.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Denmark ($X), Norway ($X) and Finland ($X) constituted the largest markets for video game console exported from Sweden worldwide, with a combined 92% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Estonia and the UK, which together accounted for a further 3.4%.
Estonia, with a CAGR of +24.4%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The average video game console export price stood at $X per unit in 2022, increasing by 4.3% against the previous year. Overall, export price indicated mild growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, video game console export price decreased by -23.1% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the average export price increased by 43% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the maximum at $X per unit in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Denmark ($X per unit), while the average price for exports to Finland ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Estonia (+5.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Sweden
In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas purchases of video game consoles, when their volume decreased by -29.4% to X units. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a perceptible expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 79% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X units in 2021, and then dropped dramatically in the following year.
In value terms, video game console imports reduced sharply to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate noticeable growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 89% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2021, and then fell sharply in the following year.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Ireland (X units) constituted the largest video game console supplier to Sweden, with a 48% share of total imports. Moreover, video game console imports from Ireland exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the Netherlands (X units), twofold. Germany (X units) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 12% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Ireland stood at +14.4%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the Netherlands (+16.6% per year) and Germany (-3.5% per year).
In value terms, Germany ($X), Ireland ($X) and the Netherlands ($X) constituted the largest video game console suppliers to Sweden, together comprising 86% of total imports. Denmark, China and the UK lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 10%.
Among the main suppliers, China, with a CAGR of +28.8%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The average video game console import price stood at $X per unit in 2022, with an increase of 7.1% against the previous year. In general, the import price saw a mild expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 67%. The import price peaked at $X per unit in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per unit), while the price for China ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Germany (+11.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
