The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 123% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, apple imports fell remarkably to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, posted resilient growth. In 2021, Italy (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of apple to Switzerland, with a 73% share of total imports. Moreover, apple imports from Italy exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, New Zealand (X tons), more than tenfold. Chile (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 4.7% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Italy stood at +13.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: New Zealand (-11.9% per year) and Chile (+2.6% per year).
In value terms, Italy ($X) constituted the largest supplier of apples to Switzerland, comprising 58% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Chile ($X), with a 9.3% share of total imports. It was followed by New Zealand, with a 9.1% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Italy totaled +19.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Chile (+6.4% per year) and New Zealand (-11.0% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The average apple import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 4.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 42% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Chile ($X per ton), while the price for Italy ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
