For the third consecutive year, the Swiss baby clothes market recorded decline in sales value, which decreased by -4.3% to $X in 2022. In general, consumption showed a slight decline. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

For the third consecutive year, Switzerland recorded growth in shipments abroad of babies clothing and accessories (not knitted or crocheted), which increased by 16% to X tons in 2022. Overall, exports posted a strong expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 38%. The exports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, baby clothes exports reached $X in 2022. In general, exports saw resilient growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 38% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Germany (X tons), Poland (X tons) and France (X tons) were the main destinations of baby clothes exports from Switzerland, together comprising 63% of total exports. Austria, the Netherlands, Italy and Hong Kong SAR lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 29%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Hong Kong SAR (with a CAGR of +68.2%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Hong Kong SAR ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Poland (+16.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, overseas purchases of babies clothing and accessories (not knitted or crocheted) decreased by -2.2% to X tons, falling for the sixth consecutive year after two years of growth. Over the period under review, imports saw a perceptible shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when imports increased by 4.7%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, baby clothes imports reduced to $X in 2022. Overall, imports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 7.9%. From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Myanmar (with a CAGR of +59.1%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
