In 2022, the Swiss borates market increased by 0.7% to $X, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. Over the period under review, consumption, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Borates consumption peaked in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

Germany (X tons), the Czech Republic (X tons) and the United States (X tons) were the main destinations of borates exports from Switzerland, with a combined 83% share of total exports. Belgium, China, the UK and France lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 14%.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to the Czech Republic ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Imports into Switzerland
In 2022, approx. X tons of borates were imported into Switzerland; which is down by -3.9% on the previous year's figure. Overall, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 13% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons, and then contracted modestly in the following year.
In value terms, borates imports stood at $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when imports increased by 32%. Imports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Turkey (X tons) was the main borates supplier to Switzerland, with a 93% share of total imports. Moreover, borates imports from Turkey exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the United States (X tons), more than tenfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Germany (X tons), with a 1.7% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from Turkey stood at +18.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the United States (-22.9% per year) and Germany (-0.6% per year).
In value terms, Turkey ($X) constituted the largest supplier of borates to Switzerland, comprising 74% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by the United States ($X), with a 9.5% share of total imports. It was followed by Germany, with an 8.9% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from Turkey amounted to +16.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the United States (-12.6% per year) and Germany (+0.2% per year).

The average borates import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, growing by 5.4% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the average import price increased by 19%. There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while the price for Turkey ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
