Cassava Market Size in Switzerland

After two years of growth, the Swiss cassava market decreased by -15% to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, the total consumption indicated a moderate increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Cassava consumption peaked at $X in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.

For the fifth year in a row, Switzerland recorded decline in shipments abroad of cassava, which decreased by -32.8% to X tons in 2022. In general, exports, however, showed prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 1,385% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, cassava exports declined significantly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 1,971% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

The Netherlands (X tons) was the main destination for cassava exports from Switzerland, accounting for a approx. 100% share of total exports.

In 2022, overseas purchases of cassava decreased by -22.4% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 26%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2021, and then dropped dramatically in the following year.

In value terms, cassava imports dropped to $X in 2022. In general, total imports indicated a tangible increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +56.5% against 2015 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 15%. Imports peaked at $X in 2021, and then fell in the following year.

In 2022, Costa Rica (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of cassava to Switzerland, accounting for a 86% share of total imports. Moreover, cassava imports from Costa Rica exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Vietnam (X tons), more than tenfold. The third position in this ranking was held by India (X tons), with a 2.8% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from Costa Rica amounted to +3.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Vietnam (+11.3% per year) and India (+10.2% per year).

In value terms, Costa Rica ($X) constituted the largest supplier of cassava to Switzerland, comprising 86% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Vietnam ($X), with a 3.5% share of total imports. It was followed by India, with a 2.4% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Costa Rica amounted to +5.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Vietnam (+8.0% per year) and India (+12.1% per year).

In 2022, the average cassava import price amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 19% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.3%. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Ecuador ($X per ton), while the price for Vietnam ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Ecuador (+10.2%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
