Exports from Switzerland

After three years of growth, shipments abroad of ethyl alcohol decreased by -0.5% to X litres in 2022. In general, exports, however, showed significant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 250% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X litres in 2021, and then shrank slightly in the following year.

In value terms, ethanol exports soared to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 243%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

Exports by Country

France (X litres) was the main destination for ethanol exports from Switzerland, with a 79% share of total exports. Moreover, ethanol exports to France exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Germany (X litres), sevenfold. Israel (X litres) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 6.7% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to France stood at +23.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Germany (+56.7% per year) and Israel (+173.6% per year).

In value terms, France ($X) remains the key foreign market for ethyl alcohol exports from Switzerland, comprising 77% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Germany ($X), with an 11% share of total exports. It was followed by Israel, with a 5.7% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to France totaled +35.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Germany (+47.2% per year) and Israel (+106.3% per year).

The average ethanol export price stood at $X per litre in 2022, growing by 18% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, recorded a pronounced descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 an increase of 49% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per litre. From 2017 to 2022, the average export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per litre), while the average price for exports to Israel ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to France (+9.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

For the fifth consecutive year, Switzerland recorded growth in overseas purchases of ethyl alcohol, which increased by 18% to X litres in 2022. Over the period under review, imports recorded resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 28%. Imports peaked in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in years to come.

In value terms, ethanol imports surged to $X in 2022. In general, imports posted strong growth. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

Poland (X litres), the Netherlands (X litres) and Germany (X litres) were the main suppliers of ethanol imports to Switzerland, with a combined 46% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Poland (with a CAGR of +310.7%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest ethanol suppliers to Switzerland were Poland ($X), the Netherlands ($X) and Germany ($X), together accounting for 50% of total imports.

In terms of the main suppliers, Poland, with a CAGR of +268.4%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average ethanol import price stood at $X per litre in 2022, growing by 26% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.1%. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per litre), while the price for Brazil ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.
