The Netherlands (X tons) was the main destination for garlic exports from Switzerland, accounting for a 59% share of total exports. Moreover, garlic exports to the Netherlands exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, France (X kg), threefold. The third position in this ranking was held by Spain (X kg), with a 19% share.

After four years of growth, purchases abroad of garlic decreased by -6.1% to X tons in 2022. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 17% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.
In value terms, garlic imports dropped markedly to $X in 2022. Overall, total imports indicated a temperate increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 41% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2021, and then reduced rapidly in the following year.

In 2022, Spain (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of garlic to Switzerland, with a 75% share of total imports. Moreover, garlic imports from Spain exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, China (X tons), sevenfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by France (X tons), with a 6.4% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Spain amounted to +15.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: China (-10.6% per year) and France (-2.7% per year).
In value terms, Spain ($X) constituted the largest supplier of garlic to Switzerland, comprising 69% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by China ($X), with a 9.2% share of total imports. It was followed by France, with an 8.1% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from Spain totaled +12.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: China (-4.3% per year) and France (-3.9% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the average garlic import price amounted to $X per ton, dropping by -11.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 an increase of 27%. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2021, and then fell in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while the price for China ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
