In terms of the main countries of destination, the United Arab Emirates, with a CAGR of +0.6%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline.

In 2021, the average imitation jewellery export price amounted to $X per ton, falling by -6% against the previous year. Over the last nine-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.0%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the average export price increased by 24%. There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Hong Kong SAR ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to the UK ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2021, supplies from abroad of imitation jewelry increased by 70% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt descent. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, imitation jewellery imports surged to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, recorded a pronounced decline. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2021, China (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of imitation jewellery to Switzerland, with a 66% share of total imports. Moreover, imitation jewellery imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, France (X tons), more than tenfold. The third position in this ranking was held by Germany (X tons), with a 4.7% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from China totaled -6.4%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: France (-4.6% per year) and Germany (-12.5% per year).

In value terms, the largest imitation jewellery suppliers to Switzerland were China ($X), France ($X) and Thailand ($X), together accounting for 75% of total imports. These countries were followed by Italy, Germany, Austria, Hong Kong SAR and the UK, which together accounted for a further 19%.

Italy, with a CAGR of +3.3%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the average imitation jewellery import price amounted to $X per ton, dropping by -23.2% against the previous year. Overall, import price indicated a temperate increase from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.1% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the average import price increased by 33%. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2020, and then contracted markedly in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was France ($X per ton), while the price for the UK ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
