The Swiss lithium battery market was finally on the rise to reach $X in 2021, after two years of decline. Over the period under review, the total consumption indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +8.5% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, consumption reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In 2021, overseas shipments of lithium cells ans batteries increased by 13% to X tons, rising for the third consecutive year after three years of decline. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.5% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 39% against the previous year. The exports peaked in 2021 and are likely to see steady growth in the near future.

In value terms, lithium battery exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +3.8% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 31% against the previous year. The exports peaked in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

Exports by Country

Germany (X tons), the Czech Republic (X tons) and China (X tons) were the main destinations of lithium battery exports from Switzerland, together accounting for 60% of total exports. France, the United States, the UK, Austria, Latvia, Denmark, Hong Kong SAR and Spain lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 25%.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Latvia (with a CAGR of +167.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for lithium battery exported from Switzerland were Germany ($X), the Czech Republic ($X) and China ($X), together accounting for 55% of total exports. The United States, France, the UK, Latvia, Austria, Hong Kong SAR, Denmark and Spain lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 29%.

Among the main countries of destination, Latvia, with a CAGR of +156.5%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the average lithium battery export price amounted to $X per ton, surging by 5.3% against the previous year. Overall, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when the average export price increased by 45%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2017 to 2021, the average export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was the UK ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Denmark ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to China (+4.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the amount of lithium cells ans batteries imported into Switzerland skyrocketed to X tons, with an increase of 43% against 2020. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.9% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, lithium battery imports rose markedly to $X in 2021. In general, total imports indicated a prominent increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +8.8% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +19.4% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 46% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2021, China (X tons) constituted the largest lithium battery supplier to Switzerland, accounting for a 49% share of total imports. Moreover, lithium battery imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Germany (X tons), fivefold. Japan (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with an 8.7% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from China amounted to +11.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Germany (+1.0% per year) and Japan (+6.7% per year).

In value terms, the United States ($X) constituted the largest supplier of lithium cells ans batteries to Switzerland, comprising 58% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by China ($X), with a 15% share of total imports. It was followed by Germany, with a 5% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from the United States totaled +11.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: China (+11.9% per year) and Germany (+1.2% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The average lithium battery import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, which is down by -21.7% against the previous year. In general, import price indicated a temperate increase from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.8% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 34% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was the United States ($X per ton), while the price for Italy ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Indonesia (+13.8%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
