The Swiss luggage market reduced to $X in 2021, waning by -5.8% against the previous year. This figure reflects the total revenues of producers and importers (excluding logistics costs, retail marketing costs, and retailers' margins, which will be included in the final consumer price). Overall, consumption, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of the market failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, overseas shipments of luggage and handbags were finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. In general, total exports indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.3% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports decreased by -13.0% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 23%. The exports peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, luggage exports stood at $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports showed a strong increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 51% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Germany (X tons), Italy (X tons) and France (X tons) were the main destinations of luggage exports from Switzerland, together comprising 57% of total exports. These countries were followed by China, the UK, the United States, South Korea, Japan, Hong Kong SAR, Poland, the Netherlands and Austria, which together accounted for a further 32%.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Poland (with a CAGR of +21.9%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest markets for luggage exported from Switzerland were Italy ($X), Germany ($X) and China ($X), together comprising 48% of total exports. France, the United States, Hong Kong SAR, South Korea, Japan, the UK, the Netherlands, Poland and Austria lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 42%.
In terms of the main countries of destination, Poland, with a CAGR of +29.5%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the average luggage export price amounted to $X per ton, falling by -9.2% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the average export price increased by 34%. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Hong Kong SAR ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Poland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the Netherlands (+21.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, overseas purchases of luggage and handbags were finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a noticeable descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 11%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, luggage imports shrank slightly to $X in 2021. In general, total imports indicated measured growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.6% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -15.5% against 2018 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 26%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
In 2021, China (X tons) constituted the largest luggage supplier to Switzerland, accounting for a 53% share of total imports. Moreover, luggage imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Italy (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Germany (X tons), with a 7.9% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from China amounted to -6.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Italy (+2.9% per year) and Germany (-7.5% per year).
In value terms, Italy ($X) constituted the largest supplier of luggage and handbags to Switzerland, comprising 44% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by China ($X), with a 17% share of total imports. It was followed by France, with a 15% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Italy amounted to +10.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: China (-2.0% per year) and France (+3.0% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the average luggage import price amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by -5.7% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, continues to indicate a remarkable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 34% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was France ($X per ton), while the price for China ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Vietnam (+13.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
