In value terms, molluscs exports reduced rapidly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports saw a deep downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 2,949% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Portugal (X tons) was the main destination for molluscs exports from Switzerland, accounting for a 90% share of total exports. Moreover, molluscs exports to Portugal exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, France (X kg), more than tenfold.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Portugal stood at -20.4%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: France (-37.9% per year) and the Netherlands (-37.2% per year).

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Portugal totaled -15.6%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: France (-36.5% per year) and the Netherlands (-40.1% per year).

In 2021, the average molluscs export price amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -28.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price showed a abrupt setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 an increase of 137% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Portugal ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Denmark (+14.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Switzerland
For the third year in a row, Switzerland recorded growth in purchases abroad of molluscs (scallops, mussels, cuttle fish, squid and octopus), which increased by 7.5% to X tons in 2021. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being observed in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 13% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, molluscs imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +4.5% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
Spain (X tons), Portugal (X tons) and Italy (X tons) were the main suppliers of molluscs imports to Switzerland, together accounting for 63% of total imports. These countries were followed by Vietnam, China, the United States, the Netherlands, France, the UK, Canada, Germany, Belgium and Thailand, which together accounted for a further 30%.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for the United States (with a CAGR of +34.9%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Spain ($X) constituted the largest supplier of molluscs (scallops, mussels, cuttle fish, squid and octopus) to Switzerland, comprising 38% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by the United States ($X), with a 15% share of total imports. It was followed by Portugal, with a 10% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from Spain stood at +9.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the United States (+51.7% per year) and Portugal (+4.1% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the average molluscs import price amounted to $X per ton, jumping by 27% against the previous year. Over the last nine-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.2%. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($X per ton), while the price for China ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
