In 2022, the Swiss packaging materials market increased by 19% to $X, rising for the second consecutive year after three years of decline. Over the period under review, consumption, however, showed a perceptible descent. Packaging materials consumption peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 11%. The exports peaked at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, packaging materials exports expanded markedly to $X in 2022. Overall, total exports indicated a mild expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +55.7% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when exports increased by 42% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

Germany (X tons), Poland (X tons) and the Czech Republic (X tons) were the main destinations of packaging materials exports from Switzerland, with a combined 72% share of total exports. Italy, Croatia, France, Belgium, Austria and the Netherlands lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 21%.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Croatia (with a CAGR of +9.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Germany ($X), Poland ($X) and the Czech Republic ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for packaging materials exported from Switzerland worldwide, with a combined 52% share of total exports. Italy, France, Croatia, Austria, Belgium and the Netherlands lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 22%.
In terms of the main countries of destination, Croatia, with a CAGR of +10.9%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average packaging materials export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, surging by 13% against the previous year. Overall, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the average export price increased by 42%. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the peak figure in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in years to come.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was France ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Belgium ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to France (+4.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Switzerland
In 2022, supplies from abroad of packaging materials increased by 0.5% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a slight curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 5.9%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, packaging materials imports soared to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, recorded a slight shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 19%. Imports peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Germany (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of packaging materials to Switzerland, with a 51% share of total imports. Moreover, packaging materials imports from Germany exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Austria (X tons), threefold. Sweden (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with an 11% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Germany was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Austria (+2.9% per year) and Sweden (-2.3% per year).
In value terms, Germany ($X) constituted the largest supplier of packaging materials to Switzerland, comprising 47% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Austria ($X), with an 11% share of total imports. It was followed by Sweden, with a 9.8% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from Germany was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Austria (+4.3% per year) and Sweden (-3.7% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The average packaging materials import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, picking up by 16% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2013; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while the price for Austria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
