Exports by Country
China (X tons) was the main destination for pork exports from Switzerland, accounting for a 61% share of total exports. Moreover, pork exports to China exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Austria (X tons), fourfold. Germany (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 12% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to China stood at +185.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Austria (+58.3% per year) and Germany (-12.4% per year).
In value terms, China ($X), Germany ($X) and Italy ($X) constituted the largest markets for pork exported from Switzerland worldwide, together comprising 89% of total exports.

In 2022, purchases abroad of pork decreased by -47.5% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a moderate expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 318%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, pork imports fell rapidly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, enjoyed a noticeable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 194% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In 2022, Germany (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of pork to Switzerland, accounting for a 63% share of total imports. Moreover, pork imports from Germany exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Portugal (X tons), sevenfold. The third position in this ranking was held by Austria (X tons), with a 9.5% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Germany totaled +8.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Portugal (+13.9% per year) and Austria (-8.6% per year).
In value terms, Germany ($X) constituted the largest supplier of pork to Switzerland, comprising 52% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Spain ($X), with an 11% share of total imports. It was followed by Portugal, with an 11% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from Germany amounted to +5.4%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Spain (+21.0% per year) and Portugal (+15.8% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the average pork import price amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 15% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a slight descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when the average import price increased by 56% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2016 to 2022, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.
